Donkey Kong Country 2 Coming To Nintendo Switch Online Alongside Three Other Titles Brian Shea Hot off the surprise addition of Super Mario All-Stars to the Super NES library of Nintendo Switch Online earlier this month, Nintendo has announced the full lineup of September additions to its subscription catalog. In addition to the already-released Super Mario All-Stars, the Super NES library will receive three new additions, while the NES library will see one new game. The headliner this month is undoubtedly Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (pictured above). The follow up to the iconic SNES platformer sees Diddy and Dixie Kong taking the spotlight in an adventure to save Donkey Kong from the clutches of King K. Rool. In addition, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can look forward to adding puzzle game Mario's Super Picross and action title The Peace Keepers on the SNES side, while NES enthusiasts have S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team coming at them. Mario's Super Picross In order to access the ever-growing library of classic games available on Switch, which includes titles like The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Mario World, Super Metroid, and Super Mario Kart, you must be a subscriber to Nintendo Switch Online. The service, which also grants you access to Switch games' online features, also gives you the ability to play downloadable titles like Tetris 99 and the upcoming Super Mario Bros. 35 at no additional cost. These new Nintendo Switch Online additions arrive on September 23. https://ift.tt/32yeu1r

Star Renegades Review – Pixel Paradise Lost Daniel Tack Publisher: Raw Fury Developer: Massive Damage, Inc. Release: September 8, 2020 (PC), 2020 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch) Reviewed on: PC Also on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch In Star Renegades, only you can save the future from an evil empire. However, your scrappy crew of futuristic space raiders is destined to face insurmountable odds. The solution to staring down endless deaths in the face of super soldiers and murderous mechs? Travel from dimension to dimension to find the reality where you can finally set things right.  Click here to watch embedded media Star Renegades is a turn-based, roguelike, sci-fi experience where your goal is to liberate planets and eventually take the battle to an enemy mothership. You deal with party wipes often and get sent back to the start, but you can keep some powerful unlocks and new characters to bring along on the journey. A new run often feels like a fresh start, pushing closer to a classical roguelike instead of the permanent boosts and comfort of the new-age roguelite. Star Renegades is tough, and can even seem blatantly unfair at times with surprise bosses and one-shot kills, but the pixelated and picturesque jaunts are worth taking again and again, even in the face of your inevitable demise.  Crafting your crew for each adventure is fun. Pick from an assortment of deadly but vulnerable backline shooters and snipers, frontline tanks and brawlers, and supports that can fit wherever you have room. The combat system is simple at the onset, but rolls out more complexity like area-of-effect considerations, formation placement, and defensive tactics over the course of a four-stage endeavor. Watching your attacks play out is almost hypnotic; Star Renegades’ art style is impossible to ignore and breathtaking to behold, especially in combat. The turn-based timing system is simple and efficient, with you knocking your opponents off the action bar with critical hits and break attacks before they can unleash on your crew. However, rolling through the earlier planets on every new run becomes laborious as you try to quickly reach the meatier segments that test your skill and luck. Click image thumbnails to view larger version                                                                                                                Especially in the endgame, critical enemy movesets and incoming abilities can be unclear due to a busy and often unhelpful user interface, which can lead to unfortunate deaths even if you’ve mastered the combat system’s intricacies. Despite plenty of loot to discover, each character levels up in a linear fashion, so you’re using many of the same moves and abilities each turn and each run. This can make plodding through the first few acts feel like busywork without much variation. A camping system allows you to build relationships between characters through a card-based conversation system, adding some variety to the mix by unlocking special and fantastic team attacks. If you build up enough relationship rapport during a run, you could even unlock progeny characters that play close to the parent’s ability set with a minor change in an attack or ability, allowing you to change a core kit slightly. It doesn't amount to much for all but the most dedicated optimizers, but it adds some longevity for those who want to play again and again. Star Renegades looks incredible, has a solid combat system, and succeeds in beckoning you back for run after run until you eventually surpass the final foe. While you may not immediately grab your blaster for another play after you’ve surmounted the radical difficulty spike near the end of a run, there are a lot of great systems at play here. Score: 8 Summary: If at first you don't save the galaxy, give it another go or ten. Concept: Stop the evil empire, one dimension hop at a time Graphics: The pixelated art, animations, and environments are absolutely gorgeous Sound: A sufficiently spirited selection of sounds keeps you energized during your many attempts Playability: Star Renegades is challenging, so be prepared for a difficult and punishing experience Entertainment: Beautiful, deadly, repetitive and harsh, Star Renegades is a stylish adventure worth playing Replay: High Click to Purchase https://ift.tt/32us2el

PlayStation 5 Showcase Coming This Wednesday Daniel Tack Ready to see some new PlayStation 5 information? Aren't we all? After big info drops for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S, it stands to reason that Sony is probably ready to sharing pricing and other details for its next generation console. Oh, and games. The showcase is scheduled to hit in just a few days on September 16th at 3 PM CT. PlayStation 5 Showcase broadcasts live this Wednesday at 1pm Pacific Time: https://t.co/W4gkVp7pdv pic.twitter.com/Nn33RT0yki — PlayStation (@PlayStation) September 12, 2020 So, we can anticipate pricing and other details, but what else? Games of course. Nothing is known for sure, but I've got a few wildly speculative guesses for some big titles we might see, like Final Fantasy XVI and a new Silent Hill. Pure speculation of course, but that's what Twitter seems to think is happening after I browsed through dog gifs for about an hour. Definitely good info there, right? Who really knows, but given how the year's rollout has been massively impacted by the global pandemic, it does make complete sense that many reveals from earlier in the year were delayed until now or much later. So we might get a taste of some of those delayed "E3" reveals. We'll have to wait and see! https://ift.tt/33kdkpG

Reader Discussion - How Do You Feel About The Xbox Series X & S Prices? Jason Guisao After what felt like eons of time (and with the help of a major leak), Microsoft has finally unveiled the retail prices of the Xbox Series X and its slim, sleek counterpart, the Series S. While the Series X is listed at $499, the Series S has a more manageable price of $299. The specs between the two consoles aren't particularly drastic, but the Series X is undeniably pumping out better numbers including more memory storage and a higher native resolution. Additionally, both consoles have financing options - which, if you ask me, is a godsend! But, we're not here to listen to what I think about these prices; we're hear to get feedback from you! What do you think about the prices? Were you expecting both consoles to cost more or less than what they were revealed to be? Does anybody else think they're going to try out the financing options? No More Heroes 3 Delayed To 2021 Brian Shea No More Heroes 3, which was unveiled at E3 last year, has been delayed to 2021. The Switch-exclusive title was originally planned for a 2020 release, but developer Grasshopper Manufacture has announced a delay to the anticipated action title due to complications surrounding the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Star Renegades Rockets Into Release Today Daniel Tack Star Renegades is out today on Steam, GOG, and Xbox Game Pass PC. Ready to build a crew of galaxy gladiators and take on giant mechs and rowdy bounty hunters on weird planets and mysterious caves? Even as you fail against the evil empire time after time, you come back with some extra resources — new gear, comrades, or other upgrades — to bring the fight back harder. Marvel's Avengers Review – A Powerful Superhero Experience Andrew Reiner Publisher: Square Enix Developer: Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal Release: September 4, 2020 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia), 2020 (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X) Rating: Teen Reviewed on: PlayStation 4 Also on: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, Stadia, PC Like the rampaging Hulk and his transformation into the brainy Bruce Banner, Marvel’s Avengers is a game of shifting personas and experiences. Developer Crystal Dynamics delivers a powerful superhero showcase that taps into each Avenger’s unique abilities to light up the battlefield in thrilling ways, but when the dust settles, it slows down to show a softer, human side that is every bit as engaging, placing a character you wouldn’t expect in the central role. Crystal Dynamics makes a huge gamble right out of the gate, delivering the message that even though the name Avengers is on the box, this is actually a story about a young girl named Kamala Khan – a huge fan of the super team. The opening moments show Kamala at an Avengers convention, geeking out when she meets the likes of Captain America and Black Widow. Kamala’s viewpoint as a little kid is a refreshing change of pace, and her excitement is likely in line with the player’s, showing an appreciation for these awesome heroes. It’s a fun way to kick off this story, but I was shocked by just how little screen time the Avengers get in early parts of the campaign. They are hardly featured within the first three to four hours of play, but it oddly works. The focus this time is instead on Kamala’s origin story and her growing into the role of Ms. Marvel. This coming-of-age tale is beautifully penned with some legitimately touching moments along the way. Even as she is learning about her powers, Kamala shows us she’s no slouch in combat, using a wild set of fun shapeshifting moves to pummel foes. While combat is the central hook, a good portion of Kamala’s gameplay is distinct and consists of frantic platforming. Ms. Marvel grabs onto ledges, tumbles when platforms crumble under her feet, and barely survives every big leap – all elements that recall Crystal Dynamics’ previous work on the Tomb Raider series. Kamala is even pushed to use stealth in a few sequences to sneak past AIM robots that serve MODOK, another character that is realized in awesome ways and is developed thoroughly from start to finish. Click here to watch embedded media The platforming action is differentiated by a superhuman element, allowing players to use Ms. Marvel’s stretching abilities to propel her great distances and feel like a hero. These sequences, while impressing with the level destruction often on display, are repetitive in their steps, and fail to deliver a true sense of danger. They do, however, aid the narrative and help Kamala further develop into the game’s most dynamic character. It’ a game about the Avengers, yet the true star isn’t part of their ranks. I love that the story takes chances to keep you off-kilter, all with a satisfying amount of narrative pay-off. When Ms. Marvel meets the Hulk in her attempt to reunite the team, the entire game structure transforms. It moves from linear, story-driven sequences to a hub format filled with deep RPG systems and a world map with a dizzying array of single-player and cooperative missions. I didn’t like hoofing it in the hub world to talk to various vendors, but the map is nicely designed and gives you all of the info you need before jumping into new critical-path missions or side activities. At this point in the game, Kamala Khan’s story remains strong, and is joined by mini-arcs for each of the Avengers. Crystal Dynamics did a nice job creating scenarios tailored to these heroes’ unique abilities. The Hulk is the unstoppable monstrosity you’d hope, smashing enemies and environments to bits. Thor’s Mjölnir absolutely wallops enemies, and each swing feels like it is delivered by a god. I also enjoyed the shield antics of Captain America (who doesn’t get much screen time for good narrative reasons), and the acrobatics of Black Widow. All of these heroes have great cinematic moments backed by huge gameplay setpieces. I don’t want to spoil any of them, but one cool sequence has you frantically running as the environment rotates around you. Crystal Dynamics also keeps you on your toes by challenging the norm for many of the heroes, putting them in situations where they may not have their gear or are wounded. Iron Man is the only character that I didn’t find enthralling. His gameplay isn’t bad, but it’s tedious; his ranged attacks aren’t much fun, and his close-quarters melee isn’t as impressive as the other heroes’. Nolan North’s performance as Tony Stark is good – his voice and delivery work – but the jokes are overdone, sounding like a one-liner machine on the fritz. All of the characters share similarities in button mapping, but feel distinct when it comes to combat and moves. Light and heavy combos abound for each hero, and are a blast to use. Each character also has a nice solution for ranged or airborne targets. The dodge, block, and parry systems are put to good use against almost every AIM enemy type, though your foes don’t have much variety. Every encounter and success feeds into an experience point system that allows you to level up and earn new abilities. Avengers offers a surprising amount of depth in this field. You can’t really spec out a hero differently than their base potential, but you can add extra moves to combos, speed up cooldowns on ranged attacks, and make each character more lethal in certain ways. There are over 100 abilities for each character. It’s a rewarding system that will keep you playing for a long time. Most of the critical-path missions are nicely designed and offer up plenty of rewards, but the same cannot be said of some of the side activities. For example, some assignments consist of destroying a just few things, so the mission is over almost as quickly as it began; I think I spent more time in the pre-match lobby (which can take time to load and find other players) than actually playing. You also get some odd control-point missions, which push you to stand on a spot to claim it, almost like Crystal Dynamics was thinking about competitive multiplayer ideas and just decided to use them here instead. The control missions are easy with other players at your side, but can be maddening with A.I., which rarely try to claim spaces. The heroes are better when they are united on the battlefield. The cooperative play is exceptionally good. Most environments are wide-open spaces that allow a full team of four to clobber enemies in style, and you can also up the difficulty with your friends to get better rewards and make the battles more dynamic. You are pushed to earn better gear to raise each of the heroes’ overall power ratings, which you need to tackle harder missions. You may have a power rating of 12, yet need 50 to stand a chance in a particular side mission. Crystal Dynamics clearly has played some Destiny, since the loot system, various currencies, factions, and hub world are nearly identical in concept. Most of the gear you gain isn’t shown cosmetically, and the influx of items makes the experience drag. Getting a +1 spinal cord for Hulk is just weird, and does +1 really make a difference? Sure, the loot makes heroes more potent, but it just isn’t fun to collect. Outside of legendary items, the one category of loot that is instantly satisfying is costumes. Crystal Dynamics loaded up on different outfits for each hero, and a lot of them are great nods to Marvel’s comic books. Getting the costumes either requires grinding to earn currency (of which there is an unnecessarily confusing variety), making progress on the Challenge Card (Avengers’ equivalent of a battle pass system), or getting a blueprint to fabricate. Click image thumbnails to view larger version                                                                                                                Nothing really comes quick in Avengers. I wouldn’t call the process a slog, as I had a good time making progress and replaying missions with friends. However, it goes slowly, making it seem like the structure is designed for you to spend real money to progress faster. Crystal Dynamics wants you to play this game for years to come, and Avengers has plenty of content to keep you engaged at launch, but replaying missions on higher difficulties to get better gear won’t be enough down the road. It doesn’t have the competitive hooks of similarly designed games like Destiny. A steady drip of new stories and missions will be needed along with the announced heroes. Avengers is in great shape right now, dazzling with its story and action. I’m hooked on the end-game content that is available now, and I want to see just how powerful these heroes can become after leveling them completely. Avengers, assemble! You have a great game to play! Score: 8.75 Summary: Crystal Dynamics delivers a fun brawler that hones in on each of the heroes' unique abilities. Concept: Avengers succeeds in its superhero power fantasy and is backed by solid writing, a fun origin story, and plenty of depth to keep you playing Graphics: Worlds are swimming with details and the character animations are awesome. The game always looks great, whether you’re seeing story scenes or action-packed combat Sound: Sandra Saad is perfect as Kamala Khan, and the rest of the voice performers fit their roles well. The soundtrack matches the superhero excitement Playability: A lot of care went into making a universal moveset that is easy to grasp while allowing each hero to be distinct. Combat and traversal are both well done Entertainment: The amount of depth can be confusing at first, but you have plenty of reasons to keep playing in the endgame Replay: Moderately High Click to Purchase https://ift.tt/3lO9BsK

Madden NFL 21 Review – Playing It Safe Brian Shea Publisher: EA Sports Developer: EA Tiburon Release: August 28, 2020 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC), TBA (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, Stadia) Rating: Everyone Reviewed on: Xbox One Also on: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, Stadia, PC Each year, every team must take a look at what it currently has and compare that with what it needs in order to achieve its goals. This year, EA Tiburon used its offseason to fine-tune gameplay, add a new arcade-style experience, and upgrade its career mode. But much like a middling football team, Madden NFL 21 isn’t quite ready to make a run at postseason glory. Stepping onto the field with your teammates, calling plays, and working together to come out on top remain exciting. The on-field action, which was largely solid last year, has only been improved upon. I love the new Skill Stick for pass rushing, allowing you to be more fluid with your attempts to blow past the offensive linemen. While it’s not as revolutionary for ball carriers, the Skill Stick gives you more control over the moves you pull off when you’re evading would-be tacklers. Defenders are more aware and precise in getting you to the ground in this iteration, and my offensive players were more likely to outstretch their arms to reach a close first down, adding realism and alleviating some frustration from previous years. These improvements are small, but they go a long way to making play across all modes more enjoyable. The cinematic career mode, Face of the Franchise, returns with an expanded pre-NFL experience, but the longer high school and college preamble just delays you reaching the main event of making the NFL. The story and presentation are woefully unaware of what’s going on; it was laughable that even when I was blowing out every team by 50 or more points there was still a battle for the starting job. On the narrative side, the story is full of unlikeable characters, ranging from your snippy friend and rival to your terrible-at-pep-talks college coach, and the faces in the cutscenes are definitely meant to be covered by football helmets. Click here to watch embedded media Once you make it into the NFL, the mode thankfully picks up. Rather than playing every game, Face of the Franchise puts you in three or four pivotal games per season that play a significant role in determining your legacy. These important moments are presented through narrative story arcs. I loved navigating these arcs, which range from leading a stacked team of star players to the Super Bowl to dealing with a performance-hindering injury, but I was often annoyed by how little my performance actually contributed to my team’s season. These arcs present you with fun scenarios off the field, such as trash-talking your rival to get a stat boost (but also firing up a key defender), or answering a question in a press conference about a teammate to affect their morale. However, even in the NFL, the narrative struggles to acknowledge what happens on the field; my all-time great run with the Ravens ended abruptly when the team decided to replace me with an awful backup. While Face of the Franchise received myriad changes, the series’ standard franchise mode has been largely neglected. Taking command of a team in hopes of creating the next great dynasty remains thrilling, but I’m disappointed by the lack of upgrades. This is often my go-to mode in Madden, but it feels nearly identical to the offerings last year. You can create an online league to take franchise mode into the multiplayer realm or immerse yourself in the card-based Ultimate Team mode with options like seasons and MUT Squads, but Madden NFL 21’s online suite remains largely focused on quick one-off competitions. From standard head-to-head multiplayer to the rapid-fire, 5-minute Superstar K.O. mode, you can certainly still step into the online suite with the mindset of getting your fix and moving on without any long-term commitment. Madden NFL 21 also introduces The Yard, a mode inspired by backyard football, where it’s 6v6, modified rules, and all players play both sides of the ball. I enjoy the callbacks to the style of football I played with family and friends as a kid. Since there’s no offensive line, the quarterback can’t scramble unless a defender blitzes, with the defense operating on a “One-Mississippi” rule for crossing the line of scrimmage. Toss other elements not found in the NFL, like trick plays with multiple passes, directly snapping the ball to any player on your team, and stylish behind-the-back throws and between-the-legs catches, and The Yard aptly differentiates itself from the action on the NFL gridiron. While the mode delivers unique offline challenges to complete and fun head-to-head online play, the customizable nature of the players’ outfits often makes it difficult to differentiate the two teams. Click image thumbnails to view larger version                                                                                                                Each time you jump into a game, you select a prototype, which essentially acts as a loadout for your player in that game. These prototypes are modeled after some of the NFL’s biggest stars like Lamar Jackson and Odell Beckham Jr., and level up as you use them. I loved adding additional skills to my favorite prototypes, but the drip-feed of unlocks and the ambiguity of what I was actually earning – both with prototypes and the mode’s cosmetics – made it less rewarding. Sadly, several immersion-breaking visual glitches occur across all modes, including invisible players on sidelines, players teleporting before your very eyes to snap into a touchdown celebration, and players constantly walking into and clipping through each other post-play. These hiccups aren’t confined to the field, however, as even the cutscenes and menus feature flickering text, repeated dialogue, and my Face of the Franchise player having the wrong college listed on his profile despite the lengthy college-focused portion of that mode. Those looking for a huge step forward in the EA Sports’ football franchise won’t find it with Madden NFL 21. However, despite its lack of major upgrades, Madden NFL 21 is still a mechanically sound and fun football game. Score: 7.75 Summary: Though the lack of meaningful new content is disappointing, Madden NFL 21 still brings a solid experience once you step onto the field. Concept: Send essentially the same team as last year (with a few minor upgrades) back on the field for another season Graphics: Madden NFL 21 looks good on the field, but visual glitches on the sidelines and in the endzone celebrations rip you right out of the experience Sound: The commentary is mostly solid, but has a tendency to meander and completely ignore context Playability: The new Skill Stick gives you more control than ever before, and the small-but-noticeable gameplay upgrades across the board improve the experience Entertainment: Despite meager upgrades this year, Madden NFL 21 still delivers solid on-the-field action for football fans Replay: Moderately high Click to Purchase https://ift.tt/2YJfBJv

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League Debuts In Stunning Trailer Andrew Reiner Click to watch embedded media It was a big day for Suicide Squad at DC FanDome, a day-long livestream filled with reveals of upcoming games, comics, movies, and more. The Suicide Squad fun began with a behind-the-scenes look at James Gunn's upcoming film. Later in the day we were shown the first trailer for Rocksteady Studios' Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League game, which is slated to release in 2022 and is a one- to four-player cooperative experience. Yes, you read that right: We won't be playing this game until 2022. In the trailer, Rocksteady debuted four characters: Harley Quinn, King Shark, Deadshot, and Captain Boomerang. We also hear the voice of Amanda Waller, who reminds the squad that they have to do as she says or the bombs in their heads will detonate. The Squad is located in Metropolis, which is currently being invaded by Brainiac and his alien minions, which are quickly revealed to have purple blood as the Squad makes short work of them. In this first look Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is much brighter than the Arkham games that Rocksteady made, but it's a part of the same universe. Some of the stories that started in the Arkham games will continue in this upcoming release. Rocksteady says that the game will be a blend of melee and gunplay. Each character will have a rich move set, which you can get a taste of in the trailer. One move is Deadshot being able to do a fuel dump from his jetpack to light enemies on fire. The entire game can be played single player, or as a four-player cooperative experience with friends. If you are playing single player, you can switch between any character at any given time, which will be controlled by A.I. when you aren't using them. Their target? A Brainiac-powered Superman. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a true next-generation release coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC. https://ift.tt/2FF8I5d

Gotham Knights Is Not Connected To The Arkham Games Andrew Reiner Gotham Knights may have plenty of connecting points to the Arkham series of games in terms of gameplay and visuals, but the story will be something new. Developer WB Montreal tells Comic Book that Gotham Knights will go in its own direction and is "not connected to the Arkham series." Following today's presentation WB Games also shared character descriptions for Batgirl, Red Hood, Robin (who we see in a Red Robin costume), and Nightwing. Here's are the official descriptions: Batgirl, also known as Barbara Gordon, is a determined fighter and a skilled hacker. As the daughter of deceased Gotham commissioner, Jim Gordon, she had helped Batman as Oracle in the past. Now, after years of recovery and preparation, she is ready to step into her new role, wielding her melee tonfa, and harnessing her training in kickboxing, capoeira and jiu-jitsu. Nightwing is Dick Grayson, the first Robin, who was Batman’s protégé before becoming a hero in his own right. He’s a natural leader and the eldest and wisest member of the Batman Family. Nightwing’s mastery in acrobatics is complemented by his expertise use of his signature dual Escrima Sticks, making him proficient at taking out enemies. Red Hood, formerly known as Jason Todd, is an intense and volatile anti-hero, which stems from his death and forced resurrection by one of Batman’s most dangerous foes. Red Hood has trouble keeping his temper in check but will not hesitate to step into the line of fire when a friend is threatened. His training has given him peak human strength and proficiency in multiple combat techniques with all manner of weapons – both traditional and high-tech. Robin is Tim Drake, the young prodigy and genius of the team, who is a master of deductive reasoning. As a true believer in Batman’s mission, he is motivated by the conviction that Gotham City needs protecting and hopes to be the type of hero Batman personified. An expert fighter armed with his collapsible quarterstaff and skilled in a variety of stealth techniques, Robin also possesses a background in combined psychological warfare and behavioral sciences. https://ift.tt/3hy32Ic

Battletoads Review – A Shallow Swamp Joe Juba Publisher: Xbox Game Studios Developer: DLALA Studios, Rare Release: August 20, 2020 Reviewed on: Xbox One Also on: PC The Battletoads were products of a strange era, sitting at the intersection ‘90s ‘tude, gross-out cartoons, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles phenomenon. That’s a peculiar cocktail for a side-scrolling brawler, and a challenging one to reimagine for a modern audience. Does this reboot strike a successful balance between old and new? That’s a fair question, but it’s so far down the list of problems that it’s also irrelevant. The biggest and most pervasive issue is much simpler: Battletoads just isn’t fun. The classic Battletoads games are traditionally remembered as brawlers, but they also experimented with other gameplay styles, like the infamous turbo bike tunnel. This reboot embraces the same philosophy, bouncing players between different activities for brief minigames or entire levels. But that variety doesn’t translate into entertainment; whether you are beating up aliens, shooting spaceships, or hacking door locks, Battletoads is profoundly uninteresting. Instead of establishing mechanics and building on them, the game sends you through a series of shallow detours. Click here to watch embedded media For example, the third act (of four acts total) has you alternating between two kinds of stages: One is a top-down space shooter, and the other is a 2D platformer. Both types are sterile, bare-bones representations of their respective genres; you blast oncoming ships and then push boxes around in simple puzzles. They are straightforward and boring, and they go on far longer than their simplistic designs can support. Most of the gameplay variations feel this way, from riding on turbo bikes to outrunning an advancing wave of acid. You understand what these sections are immediately, but they wear out their welcome as they get more difficult without offering any interesting twists. The brawling stages are what Battletoads does best, though that isn’t much of a compliment. Each toad has a slightly different playstyle with unique moves, but varying how fast or strong your character is doesn’t elevate the average combat. The action is familiar but functional; you punch and kick through bad guys, and sometimes your toad’s body morphs into weird objects. A handful of boss fights punctuate the action, but they do more to expose the weaknesses in the mechanics (like trying to hit specific targets with your tongue-flick) than take advantage of them. Some enemies have complementary attacks and work together, but it usually feels like a free-for-all. The screen fills up with bad guys, projectiles, and other hazards, which can make the action hard to parse. That’s where teamwork comes in handy, since three players can play in local co-op (online is not available). While the extra help is useful during big brawls, playing co-op can be a liability during other stages. For instance, a partner’s dumb mistake while dodging oncoming obstacles on turbo bikes limits the number of chances you have to successfully complete the gauntlet. Click image thumbnails to view larger version                                                                                                                Though some elements of the gameplay may test your skills, the story certainly isn’t aimed at seasoned gamers. I didn’t expect a grand narrative from Battletoads, but I was not prepared for how hopelessly lame it could be. The toads’ adventure is packed with scenes that feel sparse or incomplete, full of annoying characters and dumb jokes. This isn’t a “some gags just don’t land” situation; the attempts at humor are so aggressively unfunny that I was cringing during every cutscene. As the art style would suggest, maybe it’s intended for the Saturday-morning-cartoon crowd … but kids probably aren’t the best audience for a challenging reboot of a 25-year-old series. In this confusion about who the game is actually targeted at, it ends up being for no one. The kindest thing I can say about Battletoads is this: It works. The controls are fine, I encountered no major technical issues, and an optional invincibility feature allows you to easily clear sections that are giving you too much trouble. Simply being playable from beginning to end is a tragically low bar to clear, but it’s the main thing Battletoads has going for it. Otherwise, this baffling experience digs through decades of gaming history to unearth the Battletoads name only to drag it through the mud. Score: 5 Summary: This unfortunate reboot unearths the Battletoads name only to drag it through the mud. Concept: Bring the Battletoads back in a parade of disappointing minigames and lackluster combat Graphics: The visuals have a generic cartoon look that gets the job done, even if it doesn’t have much personality Sound: Grating characters, lame dialogue, and generic background music almost make this game better on mute Playability: Some of the hit detection feels inconsistent, but the controls are generally functional and easy to use Entertainment: Even though it’s technically a game, Battletoads is not a good time Replay: Moderately Low Click to Purchase https://ift.tt/2Ye71C7
