"The Bells" Reaches Back to Blur the Lines Between Good and Evil
Did you catch these references in the penultimate episode of Game of Thrones?
“Your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth,” Tyrion Lannister once told his sister, Cersei. And this threat came true when Daenerys Targaryen unleashed her fiery fury on the queen and all of King’s Landing. Ultimately, Season 8’s “The Bells” was full of premonitions and visions coming to life.
Fans will recall the Season 5 flashback (a rarity on Game of Thrones) to Cersei visiting Maggy the Frog. After a taste of the girl’s blood, the witch prophesied the confident young woman becoming queen…“for a time”, but “then comes another, younger, more beautiful, to cast you down and take all you hold dear.” After all of those worries Cersei seem to have about Margaery Tyrell, in the end, Maggy was referring to the Dragon Queen.
Of course, Maggy was not the only one with a glimpse into the future. The image of Drogon’s shadow cast over King’s Landing may have looked familiar to anyone who remembered Bran’s vision from Season 4, Episode 2:
However, perhaps the least obvious callback, but one of the most poignant, was created in a single shot: Harry Strickland, leader of the Golden Company, gazes at Daenerys and Jon Snow’s approaching army, in the same shot we once saw just two seasons ago when Jon Snow looked out at the Bolton army in “Battle of the Bastards.” But this time Jon Snow is the invader. This episode is all about the gray — heroes are acting like villains, villains are shedding tears. When the stakes are between winning and dying, nothing is, or can ever stay simple.
Hear from the show about this shot, and the blurring of good and evil in this episode’s The Game Revealed.
The final episode of Game of Thrones premieres Sunday at 9 pm.
